Transplant Donor Protection

The optimal treatment for ESRD is often a transplanted kidney from a living or deceased donor. ESRD patients who receive a transplant experience improved quality of life and lower healthcare costs. Currently, there are over 100,000 individuals waiting for a kidney transplant, while only 17,000 kidney transplants are performed each year.  By encouraging living donation, the wait times for a transplant will decrease however it is important to have protections in place for these altruistic donors. Removing barriers to living donations and strengthening access to transplantation will also benefit taxpayers and the Medicare Trust Funds.
