Since the inception of dialysis, there have been tremendous advances that now allow
patients to choose among various dialysis modalities and to select the treatment option
that best suits his or her unique lifestyle and health needs. Patients can now choose
among in-center hemodialysis (including nocturnal dialysis), home hemodialysis,
peritoneal dialysis, no treatment or the possibility of a kidney transplant.
Patients should not be required to utilize one particular modality by his or her
nephrologist, Medicare or private insurance. Instead, patients should be provided with
education on the range of dialysis modalities and the pros and cons associated with
each. The patient should then make the decision, in conjunction with their nephrologist
and their family, as to which modality best suits his or her lifestyle and health needs.
The patient retains the option to change his/her modality in consultation with his/her
physician.
