Reaching out to Your Local Reporter About National Kidney Month or World Kidney Day
A reporter in your community may be interested in doing a story during National Kidney Month or on World Kidney Day, so it will be helpful to contact them to let them know about this important time of observation about CKD.
Below are suggested key points to make if you call or e-mail a local reporter. No matter which way you choose to reach out, try to keep it as brief as possible (reporters are very busy people) and remember to leave your name and contact information in case they are interested in doing a story.
If you receive interest from a reporter, please contact DPC’s media relations coordinator, Courtney Goodwin, so she can assist you in preparing for your interview and gathering additional information that may be needed for the story. Courtney can be reached at (703) 966-1214 or cgoodwin@schmidtpa.com.
Key messages about National Kidney Month or World Kidney Day:
-
My name is ________. I am a [name of city] resident living with chronic kidney disease, a condition that affects more than 27 million Americans and continues to grow.
-
March is National Kidney Month, and March 11th is World Kidney Day – a time for educating people about kidney disease and its risk factors. These include common conditions like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
-
Unfortunately, there is low public awareness about kidney disease and what causes it. It also will often have no symptoms – so many people have it and do not know it until they have reached kidney failure.
-
I hope you will do a story on kidney disease, how it affects people in our community like me, and how it is important for people to learn more about it. With proper education, those at risk may be able to avoid it, and those with it can better manage it.
- If you are interested in learning more, please give me a call at XXX-XXX-XXXX. I can also put you in touch with representatives of a national dialysis patient organization I belong to, called Dialysis Patient Citizens, for more information. Thank you.
