Screening and Prevention

90 percent of adults with kidney disease are totally unaware they have this condition.  Kidney disease is the “silent disease” because people feel fine in the early stages. 85% of people with unidentified kidney disease crash into dialysis in the hospital emergency room.  Early identification of kidney disease is critically important so that disease progression can be slowed down by managing symptoms and getting on medications early.

Colorado is the only state known to have enacted a direct legislative statute (House Bill 26-1019, passed in 2026) specifically mandating health insurance coverage for preventive chronic kidney disease screening and diagnostic testing. DPC continues working with states to raise awareness with policymakers regarding the importance of kidney disease screening programs.
