Hello, I am Kendra Deike from Iowa. I have been a Dialysis Patient Citizens (DPC) Patient Ambassador since 2010 and recently joined the DPC Board of Directors.
My kidney journey began at birth, with a condition called congenital nephrosis. When I was three and a half years old, my dad donated his kidney to me, which lasted nearly four years and saved my life.
Although medical staff initially doubted I would become a functioning person, my determination has helped me thrive for nearly 48 years. Learning was engraved into my soul by my parents, and I went on to earn a Master’s of Business Administration in Organizational Development from Upper Iowa University. I maintained a career with the United States Postal Service until recently, when the physical toll of dialysis required me to stop working.
I have been on dialysis for nearly 37 years, and I am no longer on the transplant list. As I often say, “I am just waiting for technology to catch up with my body.” My faith in God, the support of family and friends, and a positive attitude sustains me through these challenges.
DPC has given me a sense of purpose and belonging. While our stories differ, we support one another in our work to create positive change for all kidney patients.
My experience with fellow Patient Ambassadors and staff has been life changing. I encourage anyone affected by kidney disease to join us. I look forward to continuing our work on Capitol Hill, building relationships with our Members of Congress, and starting this journey on the Board of Directors.
